A rumor broke out recently that may have accurately revealed the full title for Pirates of the Caribbean 3. 'TomJRdhd' writes today:

I work at a Disney Store in the UK and we had loads of information on upcoming Disney Films up until 2009 on the notice board. The one thing that I found interesting was we had the full title to Pirates of the Caribbean 3...It's full title is Pirates of the Caribbean: World's End.

The plot for the third film is currently under wraps, though the film will of course see the return of Johnny Depp, Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley in their starring roles. It is scheduled for a May 25, 2007 release date.

So shortened it could be..'PoTC3 - WE(eeeeeeeeeee!!!)

A week or so ago, I went to L.A. with my boss and we met up with a few of our Los Angeles contacts, one of whom works for Disney. We were invited onto the lot and met with him in his office. I had to contain my inner fangirl right from the start: The building where his office is located contains a lot of the Promotions offices, so right there in the lobby were four huge rectangular PotC2 cardboard stand-ups. They were maybe five feet wide and over six feet tall. Each featured a face of one of the main cast members: Jack, Will, Elizabeth and Davy Jones, I believe. On the back of each were action photos from the film (e.g. Jack running from the natives) that ended up being nearly life-sized. They were marvelous.

The man we met with was nice and since he’s involved with promotions as well, he’s neck-deep in PotC2 right now. He also does industry-centric advertising, promoting their projects in the hopes of getting other production houses to get involved (interesting that even Disney has to do that!). He showed us an example. It was basically a five-minute trailer for PotC3, full of cast interviews, and unfinished shots and special effects. They used the PotC theme music for it.

I only remember bits and pieces; I was there as a professional, so I didn’t want to take notes and be exposed for the fangirl I am; but I’ll put down as much as I can recall.

First, there were interviews with Jerry Bruckheimer, Keira Knightley, Johnny Depp, and Orlando. Orlando said that every time he thought it was as big as it could get, they come up with something bigger. Johnny said something similar, about how he doesn’t question what they come up with any more; he said something along the lines of, “They say, 'Johnny, we're going to launch you off this cannon and you'll land over there.' 'Oh, all right.'" It was quite funny.

Jerry Bruckheimer said that PotC3 was particularly exciting because each of the characters has his or her own agenda: Jack wants his ship, Will wants to save his father from Davy Jones, and Elizabeth wants to be with Will. (I’m not impressed with Elizabeth’s life goal – understandable though it is – but oh, well...)

Some shots I remember:

There was one scene with Jack talking with Giselle and Scarlett. The women are arguing. Jack comes over, says he doesn’t love either of them (or words similar), and that none of the arguing changes the fact that he has once again lost his ship. One whore slaps him to the left, the other slaps him back to the right, so Jack slaps Gibbs.

Another moment: Jack and a person who I believe is Elizabeth in drag approach Will and potentially Davy Jones on something that truly did appear to be a “spit of land”, it looked to be a peninsula-type stretch that was only a few feet across. It was two approaching two; Will was clearly on Davy Jones’s side, for whatever reason. Will was wearing an ankle-length coat that appeared to be made of leather. (Shallow moment: Oh, my *god*. Will looked positively virile.)

In what I think was that same scene or soon after, Will kneels all the ground while Jack stands over him with his sword to Will’s throat.

There was a scene of Jack on one of the ships, negotiating once again. The blue screens were visible behind him where I assume another ship will be put in in postproduction. Exasperated, Jack asks if anyone missed him. Only the monkey Jack raises his hand.

Unfortunately, I remember very little else, and I was too shy to ask a busy man to show me the deck of Davy Jones's ship they still had on set for a promo shoot with Pintel and Ragetti the day before. Foolish me!

RICHARDS WILL STAR IN PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN 3

KEITH RICHARDS' tumble out of a coconut tree in Fiji will not stop him making a cameo appearance in forthcoming blockbuster PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN 3. The ROLLING STONES guitarist was diagnosed with a blood clot on his brain after the accident in April (06), but following skull surgery doctors have now confirmed he will be well enough to star in the sequel. Pirates Of The Caribbean star JOHNNY DEPP based his character CAPTAIN JACK SPARROW on ageing rocker Richards, who will play his father in the third film. TOM HOLLANDER, who plays LORD CUTLER BECKETT in the movies, admits, "We were all worried when we heard about Keith's fall, but we've just heard that he's still going to appear in the film. "I'm really looking forward to meeting him. I've been in the same room as him before, but sadly at opposite ends."

From Movie Hole:

QUOTE
Finally. The ink is dry. The deal is done. The rocker will learn to sail.

Keith Richards, who producers have been in talks with for years to play the role of Captain Jack Sparrow’s pop, has finally agreed to star in a “Pirates of the Caribbean” movie.

"Hopefully, he won't fall out of any more trees," producer Jerry Bruckheimer said yesterday, referring to Richards's palm tree mishap a few weeks ago that injured his brain, requiring surgery and weeks of recuperation.

According to The Star, Richards will probably film his “Pirates of the Carribean 3” role in August, whilst The Rolling Stones are taking a respite from their tour.

Director Gore Verbinski said with a wink that Richards' role would be "open to interpretation."

Though Internet scuttlebutt had it that producers tried to get Richards for “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest” (due out next month), it was stated that the plan was always to get the rocker to do an appearance in the third film, and the third film only. In other words, it all went according to plan (or so, they care to admit).

This should be interesting!!!!!!!!! :D

Orlando is letting a few things slip about PoTC3 at the press conference in London...

QUOTE
Keira Knightley and Orlando Bloom have let slip that Rolling Stone Keith Richards is definitely to appear in the third Pirates of the Caribbean film. They revealed the rocker would play a cameo role as the father of Captain Jack Sparrow, played by Johnny Depp. Some observers have drawn comparisons between Depp's performance as the pirate and the 62-year-old guitarist. Bloom, who admitted he was a fan of the Rolling Stones, said: "I can't wait to see him." "Well - if he doesn't kill himself falling out of coconut trees. Very rock and roll." Richards underwent brain surgery in May after reportedly falling out of a tree in Fiji.

Depp is said to have based Captain Jack Sparrow on Richards It has long been rumoured that the musician was to have a cameo appearance as Depp's father. Knightley and Bloom, who were speaking at a press conference to promote the second Pirates film, Dead Man's Chest, revealed that Knightley will appear in some scenes with Richards.

Bloom said shooting the scenes with Nighy were among the most difficult as his outlandish costume was all computer generated. "It was amazing. Everything he did really translated fantastically for that character. "My hardest scene was when I had to peer through his tentacles, because there weren't any tentacles there. It was an odd thing to have to do." Bill Nighy's fishy features were added using CGI

While shooting on the third film is still under way, Bloom said filming back-to-back meant it was often hard to keep track of the storyline. "I would think, oh, I'm in the red shirt, that's means it's three. Your costume gave you the insight into what your character was doing." Neither Knightley or Bloom would be drawn on the storyline in the third, as yet untitled, film but producer Jerry Bruckheimer said there was the possibility of a fourth. He said: "We are hoping to continue the series of films. "Audiences seem to love it and we love making it, so hopefully we will get the same team back together again to make another one."

So watch out for Will in a red shirt!

ComingSoon.net has a scoop on PoTC3...

QUOTE
BANG Showbiz senior editor Simon Thompson tells ComingSoon.net that he caught up with Kevin McNally, who plays Joshamee Gibbs (Captain Jack Sparrow's number two), at the premiere in London last night and asked him about the third installment.

"The only thing I can say is that we go to a completely other part of the world and we face a completely new range of baddies which are even worse than the ones we've faced before - they're really, really evil and nasty - even more so than Davy Jones, although he'll be back of course," the actor revealed.

McNally continued: "The supernatural stories stay there and there is a big new supernatural element that's much bigger than the ones we've had before."

When asked about the location for the new movie he said that they are "heading to Singapore. If I told you any more I'd have to kill you."

Chow Yun-Fat will play Captain Sao Feng, the leader of the villains that McNally refers to above.

Johnny Depp Zone reports that POTC3, will resume shooting on August 3, 2006 and will continue until November 30, 2006. All shooting locations will be in southern California: in Los Angeles, Palmdale, and Long Beach. There will be no shooting in the Caribbean this go-round because it's the hurricane season.

Also, an official casting notice confirms that Keith Richards of the Rolling Stones will indeed be appearing in the third PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN film. Keith will be playing a pirate named Teague. (Not sure whether that's is Jack Dad or just an ordinary pirate.)

Here's what Jerry Bruckheimer told journalist Emmanuel Itier: We are planning on shooting Keith in September. In the third movie there is a pirates council, and he's going to be one of the pirates in the council. That will be a lot of fun for everybody. We've had him in costume and he looks fantastic."

With Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest about to take the top box office spot for a third weekend in a row, Walt Disney Pictures unveiled the first footage from the third installment at the San Diego Comic-Con on Saturday. While it was previously believed to carry the subtitle "At World's End," those words were not included in the presentation and we're expecting you'll be hearing a new subtitle soon.

(Spoilers ahead!)

The footage was about two minutes long and included brief interviews with producer Jerry Bruckheimer and Orlando Bloom. Chow Yun-Fat's character had many speaking lines in the clip, which featured lots of Singapore floating village shots, a rescue Captain Jack Sparrow scene, a scene where Sparrow has to convince the crew to run back and forth on the shipdeck to rock a ship over, Jack the undead monkey in Chinese Warrior armor, shots of Barbossa and Sparrow amid a huge shipboard sword battle, and a swordfight between Sparrow and Davy Jones atop a crows nest in a giant storm.

I can't wait to see how Captain Jack is rescued. I know for certain that my little Deppette will be glad to know he's alive and well.

More details from Comic Con this time posted by IGN...

After the cliffhanger ending of Dead Man's Chest, it appeared Captain Jack Sparrow may have met his maker. Considering he showed up in many of the clips of footage, he is apparently alive and well in the third film. Also seen were some glimpses of the new character Sao Feng, played by Chow Yun-Fat. There were also shots of a large sea battle, with Captain Jack displaying some of his non-traditional battle tactics. There were also shots of swordfights, and scenes with dialogue that show the traditional Pirates of the Caribbean humor will also be present in this sequel. Every major character that appeared in the first two films seemed to appear in this clip, so it would appear the series will be going out with a big bang.

More from the Comic Con. This time a report from Ain't It Cool News...

QUOTE
One of the effects guys that worked on Pirates came out and went into a lot of technical detail about how they created the effects for Davy Jones. They showed a lot of side by side shots of the actors in their motion capture suits and what the finished characters looked like. He also brought along a kind of gag reel that showed some of the jokes the animators did at the end of filming. The 2 that caught my eye were the 'Krispy Kreamed' scene. They made the rolling water wheel a krispy kreme doughnut. A lot of the animators had just worked on SW3 and showed a scene where Elizabeth was wielding 2 light sabers instead of swords. They then showed what I thought was a fairly long preview of the next movie. 2 of the scenes they showed that caught my eye was where Sparrow tells off the 2 women from Tortuga in a funny exchange after which they both slap the crap out of him. There is another scene where Sparrow asked if anyone rescued him just for the sake of rescuing him or liking him and all were quiet...except the monkey raised his hand. It looked pretty cool and should be a fun movie next year.

Also, another version from JoBlo.com...

The panel ended with a pretty bad ass preview of the third installment, PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: AT WORLD’S END. There was so much to take in, it was hard to retain everything but here are a few highlights:

* Chow Yun Fat’s character, Sao Feng, plays a significant role in the film as there were a lot of scenes of Johnny Depp’s Jack Sparrow and Keira Knightley’s Elizabeth Swan dressed in traditional Asian clothes.

*There was a double ship canon battle that looked particularly impressive.

* One scene showed Jack and the rest of the crew moving from one end of the ship to another in order to prevent the ship from tipping over.

*There seemed to be a huge battle on Sao Feng’s ship.

*There was a sword fight between Jack and Barbossa (although it could have been Jones) on top of one of the ship’s masts.

*Classic Jack Sparrow moment – “Did no one come to rescue me because they miss me?” Everyone stays quiet then the monkey raises his hand.

Does anyone here live near Guadalupe Dunes?

From MSNBC...

QUOTE
The Central Coast is about to invaded by pirates, at least briefly, for a blockbuster movie series hinged on the shenanigans of one Capt. Jack Sparrow.

Parts of the third installment of the highly successful "Pirates of the Caribbean" movies will be filmed at the Guadalupe Dunes, according to Martine White, Santa Barbara County Film Commissioner.

White said the filming of "Pirates of the Caribbean III" is expected to take place in late fall, and will last one to three days.

It is unknown whether the shooting will bring the film's stars -- Johnny Depp, Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley -- to the area, and White emphasized that even though the dunes have already been scouted by the director and department heads, a sudden script change could result in the scene being cut from the film.

"It's never definite until they actually come and begin shooting," said White.

Meanwhile, Walt Disney Pictures is doing its part to keep the shoot under wraps. The film's publicist, Michael Singer, said the filmmakers have had a "closed-up policy" since production began in 2005, and he cannot release any information about filming.

Guadalupe's mayor said he has been hearing rumors that "Pirates" would film here for about a year now.

"I'm excited," said Mayor Lupe Alvarez. "I think it has the potential of helping Guadalupe Beach like 'Sideways' did for the (Santa Ynez) Valley."

Alvarez also hopes the filming lasts longer than the expected few days.

The Guadalupe Dunes have been host to many films in the past, including Cecil B. DeMille's silent 1923 classic "The Ten Commandments;" the 1926 film "The Son of the Sheik," which starred Rudolph Valentino, and its 1921 predecessor "The Sheik;" the 1930 film "Morocco," starring Gary Cooper and Marlene Dietrich; and 1935's "The Last Outpost," starring Cary Grant.

More recently, the Dunes provided dramatic sets for "Hidalgo" (2004) and "G.I. Jane" (1997). Guadalupe's downtown also acted as a backdrop to 1998's "Rocky and Bullwinkle" and the 2000 film "Cowboy Up."

"Pirates III" is expected to be released in May 2007. Meanwhile, its filmmakers can live off the loot they garnered from "Pirates of the Caribbean II: Dead Man's Chest," which has raked in more than $344 million domestically since its June premiere.

From ohjohnny.net,apparently,At World's End is the subtitle for POTC3:

QUOTE
POTC3 is subtitled At World's End. Director Gore Verbinski says so himself in a recent interview. ("I hope that you feel like there was an era and that era came to an end and there was a reason why," said Verbinski of the trilogy. "It's nice to make a pirate movie, expand that movie and then almost do the postmodern version of that pirate movie in a trilogy. That's what I like about At World's End, because not only do we have to go to the end of the world, but there's also a double meaning because of what happened there. You'll see.")

Some PoTC-3 filming news...

QUOTE
News is filtering out that the most famous pirate in the world--Captain Jack Sparrow and his beloved Black Pearl--made port last week on the Bonneville Salt Flats.

Johnny Depp and the crew of the blockbuster movie sailed into the Salt Flats as stealthily as the Black Pearl came into Port Royal.

Disney didn't "alert the media," wanting to avoid paparazzi and devoted fans of Captain Jack from disrupting their tight shooting schedule.

Utah's Film Commission director says they've been working on enticing "Pirates" to shoot on the Salt Flats for a couple of years and it finally all just came together. He says the "Pirates" crew was in Utah for a week getting the location ready. Depp and company filmed Thursday and part of Friday.

They won't tell us how the Salt Flats fits into "Pirates 3," but one of the publicists for the movie said the bright-white desert landscape of the Salt Flats was a perfect location for what they needed.

Depp was the only star on deck as the Black Pearl weighed anchor on the Utah location.

"Pirates 3" is scheduled to be released May of 2007.

The worldwide box office for the Disney sequel stands at $993.7 million, of which $579.5 million was generated internationally. The $1 billion mark should be exceeded by Friday, the company says.

The global record is held by 1997's "Titanic" (global boxoffice of $1.8 billion), while 2003's "The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King" ended up with $1.1 billion.

The foreign box office total for "Pirates" was enriched over the weekend by an estimated $11.6 million from 49 territories.

Topping the list were France, an estimated $2.4 million in the sixth weekend for a total of $46.5 million, and Japan, $1.6 million for a market total of $78.4 million.

Keith Richards filming "Pirates" role

The Rolling Stones return to North America next week, and Keith Richards is using the time before the tour starts to get in a side gig. He's been tapped to play Johnny Depp's father in the third Pirates Of The Caribbean movie, and fellow Stones guitarist Ronnie Wood told us Keith is hard at work: "He is on the set, as we speak, with Johnny Depp. He said he's gonna come to the next rehearsal in character -- he's gonna come straight off set dressed as a pirate, and come to rehearsals."
Wood also told us that at the Stones gig in Denmark earlier this month, which closed out their European tour, Richards revealed that he's undergoing a bit of a change for the role: "He said to me, 'I'm not allowed to shave from now on, so they're gonna tie little bits on my beard (chuckles)' -- whatever bits grow. He said, 'They're gonna dangle bits off of it, and the longer it gets, the more they're gonna tie on.' And I, I just thought, 'Oh dear, I'm dying to see this!' I'll take a Polaroid for ya! (laughs)"

The Stones head back on the road beginning next Wednesday (September 13th) at Gillette Stadium in Foxboro, Massachusetts.

Pirates Of The Caribbean: At World's End, with Richards playing the father of Johnny Depp's character Captain Jack Sparrow, is on target for a May 2007 release.

On the weekend that Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest passed the $1bn worldwide gross mark, The Walt Disney Company has revealed that sequel Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End will be released day-and-date around the world next summer.

"We're going to open on the weekend of May 25 in every country around the world," said Walt Disney Motion Pictures Group president Mark Zoradi of the third installment of Jerry Bruckheimer's massively successful Pirates franchise.

"It will be our widest release ever," Zoradi added, "and it will be the first time that our company has done a literal day-and-date release."

To avoid competing with this summer's World Cup football tournament, Dead Man's Chest did not make its international debut until early July, opening in a few territories - among them France, the UK and Australia - on the same weekend as its July 7 domestic release. The film rolled out to other markets through July and August and is set for its final major-territory opening, in Italy, next weekend. Until this weekend (when Disney's Cars took over) it had been the top-grossing international film for nine straight weekends.

However, with so much built in awareness for the third film, Zoradi said, "all we need to do is get the trailer out there, put together a good campaign and I think the audience is going to be with us."

At World's End will once again star Johnny Depp, Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley, with Gore Verbinski directing. Its international appeal may be boosted by the additions to the cast of Australia's Geoffrey Rush (who also appeared in the first film) and Asian star Chow Yun-Fat.

The third film - sections of which are being shot in Asia - will conclude the initial Pirates trilogy, though it is unlikely to be the last Pirates sequel. "It's not a remake," Zoradi said. "It's going to feel different, it's going to have a different colour palette and it's going to wrap up a lot of story points."

Dead Man's Chest has just become only the third film ever - after Titanic and The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King - to gross more than $1bn worldwide. This weekend, the film's international total climbed to $592.4m and its domestic tally to $416.6m, producing a worldwide figure of $1,009,000,000.

International distributor Buena Vista International pointed out that Dead Man's Chest reached the $1bn benchmark far quicker - just 63 days - than the other two films, and did so without the help of awards season recognition.

Next weekend, Dead Man's Chest will become Buena Vista International's widest ever release in Italy. A big gross in that territory could improve the film's current standing as the sixth highest international grosser ever.

This is going to be insane...and fun. :D

Just imagine, every single one of us will be able to go to the cinema on the day day, no matter what country we are in. I can see a few box office records being smashed again.

So remember, keep May 25th free next year. :yahoo:

There's a report HERE from AV Press on the current filming situation of Pirates 3.

The publicist would not confirm if Depp and co-stars Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley were on location in Palmdale. According to earlier reports, the three were slated to be at Site 9 in September to film the remainder of "At World's End."

Singer refused to provide any other details about the shoot, including how long the production is scheduled to remain at Site 9. Disney has rented Hangar 703 from Los Angeles World Airports through at least November.

Once again a heads-up for anyone in the Guadalupe Dunes area...

Lights! Camera! Action!

The Guadalupe Dunes are once again starring in a major motion picture. Pirates of the Caribbean 3: At World's End will be shot at the dunes during the remainder of this week.

Orcutt resident Mike Easterling is hoping to get some "money shots" of the movie set and maybe ... just possibly ... movie stars!

"I heard that they're shooting Pirates of the Caribbean out here and I thought I'd come out to check it out," says Easterling.

Although everything is being kept pretty tight-lipped around here, it has been leaked that Hollywood's favorite pirate, by land of by sea, will be on the scene during the shoot.

Spectators, and Johnny Depp fans, are allowed out at the dunes today, but come tomorrow, the dunes -- including the movie set and its stars -- are off limits to the public. We understand that's when they'll start filming.

"They're basically taking over our whole parking area and utilizing some of the dunes and the beach," says Preserve Manager Willie Richerson.

And, not to worry, the preservation of the habitats are being closely monitored. Vehicles are kept on a path at slow speeds to ensure the endangered bird species, such as the snowy plover, aren't disturbed.

"We were very clear that they weren't to damage any vegetation or impact any of the park's resources," says Richerson.

Pirates of the Caribbean 3: At World's End will be in theaters May 2007. But this week, it premieres on the Central Coast.

The company that is renting out the park is contributing a donation in the amount of tens of thousands of dollars. The money will be used for maintenance, upkeep and restoration projects.

Again, Rancho Guadalupe Dunes Preserve will be closed starting tomorrow, through Saturday. The park may re-open on Sunday.

More filming news from The Lompoc Record

QUOTE
The rumors have proved true. Guadalupe has been invaded by “Pirates.”

Parts of the third installment of “Pirates of the Caribbean,” the blockbuster movie series based on the shenanigans of one Capt. Jack Sparrow, is being filmed at the Rancho Guadalupe Dunes Preserve.

With the Santa Barbara County Film Commission and Walt Disney Pictures keeping the shoot under tight wraps, and the preserve closed by county permit during the shoot, exactly what is being filmed at the dunes is anyone's guess.

And it is unknown whether the shooting will bring the film's stars - Johnny Depp, Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley - to the area.

According to the Guadalupe rumor mill, Depp and Bloom were spotted dining Tuesday night at the Far Western Tavern, but according to the restaurant, the two were not there. The rumors were widespread enough, however, to force Far Western staff to field several calls Wednesday morning on the supposed sighting.

Guadalupe Mayor Lupe Alvarez, who was also kept in the dark about the filming, drove out to the dunes Wednesday morning to see if he could get a peek at the action. He found the gates closed, but he did see a huge tent city, complete with mobile homes, big buses and other equipment, set up outside the gate. He said highway patrolmen and security guards were on duty.

“It's pretty exciting,” said Alvarez. “We've had big movies here in the past, but not to this magnitude.”

As for sighting stars in Guadalupe, that's not unheard of either, said Alvarez, adding that a few months ago he spotted actor Laurence Fishburne in town for a bite to eat with a few friends on motorcycles.

And the fact that cameras are rolling and a set has been erected on the Guadalupe Dunes holds promise that Guadalupe's sand and surf will play opposite the “Pirates” stars in one way or another.

“It's never definite until they actually come and begin shooting,” Martine White, Santa Barbara County Film Commissioner, said this summer when rumors first surfaced that the movie would film here.

White could not be reached by Wednesday afternoon for comment on the current filming.

It won't be the first time the dunes have been featured on the big screen. The area has been host to many films in the past, including Cecil B. DeMille's silent 1923 classic “The Ten Commandments;” the 1926 film “The Son of the Sheik,” which starred Rudolph Valentino, and its 1921 predecessor “The Sheik;” the 1930 film “Morocco,” starring Gary Cooper and Marlene Dietrich; and 1935's “The Last Outpost,” starring Cary Grant.

More recently, the Dunes provided dramatic sets for “Hidalgo” (2004) and “G.I. Jane” (1997). Guadalupe's downtown also acted as a backdrop for 1998's “Rocky and Bullwinkle” and the 2000 film “Cowboy Up.”

“Pirates of the Caribbean III: At World's End” is expected to be released in May 2007. Meanwhile, its filmmakers can live off the loot they garnered from “Pirates of the Caribbean II: Dead Man's Chest,” which has raked in more than $421 million domestically since its June premiere.

While local and national news cameras have focused on Buffalo-area storm damage this week, a Hollywood film crew has its lenses trained on the brink of the Horseshoe Falls.

Walt Disney Studios is shooting falls-related scenes for use in "Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End," the third installment in the wildly successful series of swashbuckling films, scheduled for release in May.

Stars Johnny Depp, Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley are nowhere in sight; instead, the thundering water of the falls is playing the lead role.

The studio is keeping mum on exactly how the footage of the world-famous waterfall will be used, but there is speculation that moviegoers will see Captain Jack Sparrow and his shipmates facing oblivion courtesy of the giant cataract. As was the case with "Bruce Almighty," where studio-shot Jim Carrey scenes were superimposed on actual Horseshoe Falls footage, Disney will use shots of the treacherous waters as background for scenes filmed in Hollywood.

"They've been using a special crane they brought in from the West Coast and a specially equipped helicopter that came in from the New York City area," said Buffalo Niagara Film Commissioner Tim Clark.

A Los Angeles-based helicopter crew was flown in to tackle the tricky, and risky, aerial assignment.

Clark confirmed that filming began Monday at Terrapin Point in Niagara Falls State Park on the U.S. side of the falls, with additional work from Table Rock on the Canadian side. Disney first contacted the local film chief back in April, starting a process that included scouting trips and a laundry list of permits.

"You can't just fly a helicopter a few feet above the falls and the Niagara River," Clark said. "There was quite a bit of paperwork, on both sides of the border, to make this happen."

Among the agencies that needed to give permission for the risky airb orne photography were: the Federal Aviation Administration; Transport Canada; the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation; and the Ontario Parks Commission.

"Our office facilitated the permit process, acted as a liaison between the studio and the government agencies, arranged security and helped them connect with support crews," Clark said. "They brought in a Disney Studios second-unit crew of about 20 people and hired about a dozen local people."

In addition to production assistants and other film-based jobs, local Teamsters union members were hired as drivers and security staffers. The local economy is also getting a boost from the crew's hotel stays in Niagara Falls.

The Niagara Falls scenes are among several large-scale, high-tech segments of the next "Pirates of the Caribbean" film. In September, crews set up shop in a sprawling aircraft hangar in suburban Los Angeles to film a pivotal nighttime storm scene involving two full-size ships. Construction of the elaborate storm set began in May.

The bulk of the filming is done on location in the Caribbean
