| Pirates of the Caribbean: The Legend of Jack Sparrow Impressions This adaptation of the upcoming summer blockbuster has Johnny Depp's voice and likeness. Awesome. By Jason Ocampo, GameSpot LOS ANGELES--Pirates of the Caribbean: The Legend of Jack Sparrow is the inevitable video game tie-in for the upcoming summer blockbuster The Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest, but it looks particularly pretty on the PC, and it has the advantage of featuring the likeness and voice of Mr. Johnny Depp himself as the pirate Jack Sparrow. The game, which is also being readied for the PlayStation 2, will let you control Jack, Will, and Elizabeth as they negotiate 24 levels, some based on the movie and others that provide some interesting windows on Jack Sparrow's adventures. Unfortunately, though Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley provide their likenesses to the game, their voices are not present. The good news is that the voice actor for Will is really close to Bloom's voice, besides which, you'll be preoccupied listening to Depp's dazed Sparrow anyway. The level that we saw in action had Jack and Will battling a bunch of Spanish troops looking to capture them, and there was the requisite swashbuckling and sword-fighting that you'd expect. You control one character at a time, while the other character is handled by the computer. You can switch between the two characters instantly, though, and that sounds like it'll be useful in some situations. Pirates will support co-op mode with two players, though there is no online capability. Pirates of the Caribbean is almost finished, and we can expect it to ship in time for the release of the movie sequel later this summer. |

| Retailers hope to cash in on movie-inspired merchandise this summer. NEW YORK - Let the force be with retailers this summer. After enjoying a sales bonanza last year from everything Star Wars, the nation's merchants, particularly toy sellers, are hoping that this summer's blockbuster films will have at least the same power to move an avalanche of merchandise, from inflatable Superman suits to pirate swords with sound effects. Among the coming summer films that have released the most merchandise are Disney-Pixar's Cars, Walt Disney's Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest and Warner Bros.' Superman Returns. Sony Pictures' The Da Vinci Code, based on Dan Brown's best-selling novel, also has some games and apparel, though the bulk of related merchandise sales is coming from all the book spinoffs, including religious and art books. For the Pirates movie, opening in theaters July 7, Disney is targeting 6- to 9-year-olds and is focusing on toys that encourage children to act out the drama in the movie. From Zizzle LLC, the main toy supplier for the movie, there are mill wheel sets with collapsing ladders and pistol and belt sets with blast sound effects.Disney's merchandising team is also reaching out to older customers with apparel and accessories that feature trendy graphics, capitalizing on the skull as an emerging fashion icon. Merchandisers are looking well beyond the summer and plan to refresh offerings tied to the DVD releases during the holiday season, as well as to sequels. Zizzle is set to release more Pirates toys later this fall in time with the DVD release -- a $50 Black Pearl ship, which has cannons that fire, as well as a $300 pinball machine that has working lights and sounds. And the company is developing toys for the third installment of the Pirates movie to be released next year. Marc Rosenberg, partner at Zizzle says he sees Pirates as a ``multi-year franchise.'' |
