From the way I have read it, I should imagine that Tolkein had them standing on top of the fireplace and they slid down a gap between the fireplace and the wall. He may or may not have known about it, but obviously couldn't retrieve them without removing the actual fireplace.
When we renovated our kitchen, behind the standing cupboards we found a couple of photos belonging to the people that lived in the house before us. I often wonder what I'm going to find when I move the furniture, more often than not its spiders!
Arrggghhhh!
