Title: Caligula

Wikipedia have listed Orlando as currently being 'in negotiations' to play the role of the Roman Emperor Caligula.
The film, slated for a 2010 released and is to be directed by Portuguese independent film producer Ulmayo Alphonso.
As we say...time will tell.
Thanks to

Probably a bit too good to be true, but that would certainly be a juicy roll! "Pretty boy emperor goes mad as a sack of hammers"
Very twisty stuff!... I'd love to see him do it!
Thanks for posting, Jesse!

Caligula initially was very popular, witty, but egotistical. History records his immorality, excessive cruelty and progressively extreme behaviour, to the extent he was considered insane. He was murdered by his Praetorian Guard.
If the rumour is true, what a role!
Thank you Jesse, for bringing this to us.

I certainly agree this would be a wonderful role.
I remember from my school days (years ago now) something about him ordering people who displeased him to commit suicide.
This is the page on Wikipedia if anyone is interested:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CaligulaI'll have a read of it later. A little rushed for time now.

While I realize this is just a rumor, I'm going to go on the pretense that if it does come to fruition, I'd have reservations about it.
I think it would be a very complex role for Orlando to play because the real Roman emperor was. He reminds me a bit of Edward I (the Roman Emperor, not Orlando) in the sense that Edward I wanted to just run rampart, but his beloved wife kept him in check. Once she died, he was all over the place. Almost the same thing happened with Caligula.
I am mindful of the unfair criticism Orlando received when he portrayed Paris in Troy. My view that he was unfairly criticized was because people didn’t take into account what role the real Paris played in Troy during his time. Prince Paris was never the warrior or soldier that Hector was, and he was very much the lady’s man thinking with his heart rather than his head. If he seen a pretty girl, he went after all and didn’t care about the consequences. With Helen of Troy, Paris fell in love with her, but we all know what that love cost – his brother’s life and the eventual downfall of Troy.
I realize that when Orlando played Paris that was years ago, and in his acting ability he has grown leaps and bounds. His performance in the last picture of Pirates show a new depth to him, and his role for In Celebration showed off his ability even further. History, when made into films, has never been a good thing, and I always cringe when I see any historical film for the directors and producers always play with it making it inaccurate. I have no question in my mind that Orlando can do the part, but hope he is not unduly criticized for his performance because a director changes history or the way they produce their film.
Still, it would be nice to see him garbed in Roman attire.
