Title: CLIP: Report On Glenrowan Dig

Jesse - May 5, 2008 08:53 AM (GMT)
I was scouting around trying to find some more information on the Ned Kelly 'bones' excavation story and this popped up on YouTube, although it's a totally different story to what I initially looking for in my search.
The news report is dated February 2008, so I should imagine the excavation is under way or has taken place but I haven't heard any more on this, its all rather interesting though and fascinating to see the 'modern day' site.

ETA: Suddenly my inbox is teaming with reports on this story of the Glenrowan dig! Is that just too freaky??!!

Yahoo 7 News report that archaeologists have now begun a four week dig on the site at Glenrowan. The director of the project, Adam Ford is confidant they will find artifacts from the shoot-out dating back to 28 June 1880, almost 130 years ago.
Ned Kelly historian Gary Dean thinks the dig could help substantiate rumours that Ned Kelly's brother Dan escaped the siege and subsequent fire by hiding in a cellar.
"Actually locating the cellar means the story, the actual oral histories from families that tell this story, means it's probably a true story."

The West Australian report that bullets have already been dug up on the first day of the dig. A council spokeswoman said during the dig's first day on Monday a cartridge casing and a piece of metal that probably came from a bullet had been found. The items, which were located using a metal detector, will now be analysed.

I'll be following this story closely so keep checking back for more news.

More news today on the Glenrowan dig.

TheWest.com.au reports that two hard brass cartridges Martini-Henry rifle and other burnt artefacts have been excavated. The Project director Adam Ford is confidant that they date back to the June 28, 1880 shoot-out.
Two posts that date back to the original inn, burnt nails and other burnt or ash covered remnants also have been found this week.

ABC.net.au has a photo of one of the cartridges and reports...
QUOTE
Excavations Director, Adam Ford believes they came from weapons that would have been used by police at the time.

"They [the cartridges] were only released to the police approximately two weeks before the siege event," he said.

"They were superseded reasonably quickly after the event. I mean within a couple of years. So I feel quite certain that they are physical evidence of the gun battle."
