Title: Orlando Drops Out of 'An Education'

Just picked this up in
The Daily Mail...

Orlando Bloom is doing full on martial arts training for a Hong Kong kung-fu movie.
It means Bloom has had to drop out of the small role he was going to take in An Education, which has just started production, with Carey Mulligan playing a teenager in Sixties London who comes under the spell of a charismatic - and totally unsuitable - older man played by Peter Sarsgaard, who introduces the girl to a high-living lifestyle.
Bloom was to have played a friend of Sarsgaard's character. Instead, the fastrising Dominic Cooper will play Bloom's role.
Mr Cooper will be seen this year in the screen version of the hit musical Mamma Mia! (still in the West End), and opposite Keira Knightley, Ralph Fiennes and Hayley Atwell in The Duchess.
Meanwhile, Bloom is limbering up and getting fit to be in Johnny To's movie The Red Circle, which will film in Hong Kong.
By the way, An Education is based on a memoir Lynn Barber wrote for Granta - it was adapted for the movies by Nick Hornby |
So he'll be doing Martial Arts training??? :woot:
ETA: In light of this announcement I have now closed all of the other topics on 'An Education'.

This is the same article as the online version from above, but I just had to scan it because of the caricature! Guess its the closest we'll ever get to seeing Danny!
**PLEASE LINK-CREDIT IF POSTING ELSEWHERE. THANKS**

I wish him continued success in whatever he choses to do.

Oooooooooh! Ripped Orlando!
And here I thought we'd seen the last of his more "athletic" build in TROY...
Just think of all the cool movie-related goodies that will be generated in the Asian market! (I know, I'm shameless). :P

Hmm, mixed feelings on this one. I really liked the sound of "An Education" (my sort of film and I'll definitely still want to see it) but it does sound like it wasn't a particularly big role for Orlando and perhaps the part in "the Red Circle" will be better from a career point of view. A kung fu movie does not appeal to me in the slightest but anything with Orlando has to be worth a look.

awww..no more brit comedy *sniffle sniffle*
the kung fu should be cool though ^^
HEEYAH!!

I don't know if I would categorize martial arts as a Kung-Fu movie. Johnny To's films are so much more than that, and while Orlando may be learning Martial Arts, I do not think it is Kung-Fu.
Jesse - March 14, 2008 10:59 PM (GMT)
I don't really know how to imagine this film as I'm not familiar with Johnny To films.
Orlando is playing a jewel thief so he will most probably be using various martial arts in his quest to steal other jewels and evade capture. That could be anything from Taekwondo, Karate or even the use of weapons in the form of Kendo.
Kung Fu is actually a term used to describe the collective arts. It was made popular with the Bruce Lee films and especially the TV series with David Carradine that was in fact called 'Kung Fu'. I've heard kids going to Judo and Karate classes say "I'm doing Kung Fu'.
It will certainly be interesting to see how this develops.

Jewel Thief is to me shades of Cary Grant in that old film (forgot the name) where he played a jewel thief. I can easily see him in something of that scenario.
OrlandoLad - March 14, 2008 11:47 PM (GMT)
That would be
TO CATCH A THIEF,
libra. One of Hitchcock's finest.
Jesse - March 15, 2008 09:57 AM (GMT)
I love Hitchcock films 'Rear Window' (the James Stewart/Grace Kelly version) is one of my favorites. I could definitely see Orlando playing a Cary Grant type of character.
What was the film Pierce Brosnan did where he played a very suave art thief?
If you mix those roles up with a few jaw-dropping martial arts action scenes then I think we may be pretty close to this film. The again, I have been known to be wrong!
Jocy - March 15, 2008 11:56 AM (GMT)
I don't really care if you're wrong with that assumption, Jesse...
it just sounds tooooooooooooooooooooooooo good... :flirt: :bigwink: :flirt:

Jesse, that film with Pierce Brosnan was "The Thomas Crown Affair", very beautiful film....and very gorgeous thief!!

Thats it! :D Thanks mayfrayn. :thumb:

OrlandoLad,
Thanks - that's the film. He would be perfect in that type of film and if this one is close to it - perfect.
Mayfrayn,
Thomas Crown Affair - perfect film for him too, style wise. I know Pierce is doing TCA - Part 2, and it was on telly just last night here.
The scene where he is running away from the paps in the second Uno commercial is close to what I'd envision him do, and think this is a good vehicle for him, though it would have been nice if he could have done both films.

Is this true about orlando not being in this film because I went and checked out his imdb pg and it is still on there and it says in red filming until it has come off there then I will believe it but at the moment I don't know what to think.
libra - March 15, 2008 06:46 PM (GMT)
Lisap
Sorry, but it is true. I take what IMDB says with a grain of salt.
lisap - March 16, 2008 05:25 PM (GMT)
Well I have been reading over on other orlando forums and alot of people are saying it is a rumour and until it has been confirmed then I will believe it. Plus I think also if it was true that it would be on Nick Hornby website about it and there is nothing on there.
Jesse - March 16, 2008 07:35 PM (GMT)
No official announcement has been released by Orlando's management but we do have it on good authority that this is true.
A member of OrlandoLove also contacted the Cafe De Paris and was given the same information.
Its possible that IMDB has not yet updated the website due to the weekend. They did take a while to list Orlando's involvement in the project so the same may apply to them correcting and updating the information.
nahla - March 16, 2008 08:50 PM (GMT)
At Kabloom they say LoriV-their official contact with orland's mom and fanmail- confirmed Orlando is off An Education due to schedule conflicts as the filming of the red circle is beginning in Hong Kong and surroundings.

You can read the news even in Nick Hornby's official blog:

| Orlando Bloom, by the way, is no longer a part of the cast of ‘An Education’. There was – ahem – a misunderstanding. It’s best not to say any more than that. He’s been replaced by the excellent Dominic Cooper |

Thanks for the update mayfrayn.
Not sure what he means by "ahem - a misunderstanding".
Had a giggle at this though....

| Earlier this week, there was a readthrough of the script, and as Alfred Molina wasn’t able to make it, I read the part of Jack. It was more fun than I am prepared to own up to. And though it’s not for me to say how good I was, some of the professional actors looked pretty intimidated by the end. |
 Alfred had better watch out!

Another report from
The Hollywood Reporter...
| QUOTE |
LONDON -- Orlando Bloom has pulled out of Lone Scherfig's "An Education" because of scheduling clashes just as the movie begins rolling, the producers said Monday.
Bloom exits the movie and is replaced by Dominic Cooper ("The History Boys") in the movie penned by oft-adapted British novelist Nick Hornby.
Producers have moved quickly to replace Bloom on the picture, which began shooting Monday and will be in front of the cameras until May on location in and around London, Oxford and Paris.
Cooper joins a cast already boasting Peter Sarsgaard, Carey Mulligan, Alfred Molina, Rosamund Pike, Olivia Williams, Sally Hawkins and Emma Thompson.
Also signing up for director Scherfig's latest is Cara Seymour, whose credits include "The Savages," "Hotel Rwanda" and "Adaptation."
Produced by Finola Dwyer and Amanda Posey, "An Education" was developed from an early stage with BBC Films. The film is being financed by James D. Stern's Endgame Entertainment and BBC Films, with Odyssey Entertainment handling worldwide sales.
Scherfig ("Wilbur Wants to Kill Himself") directs from Hornby's script based on a piece of memoir by British journalist Lynn Barber.
Billed as a teenage girl's coming-of-age drama set in early 1960s London, the story centers on a 17-year-old girl whose suburban life is about to be blown apart by the arrival of a 30-something playboy.
Executive producers are James D. Stern and Endgame Entertainment's Douglas E. Hansen and Wendy Japhet, and David M Thompson and Jamie Laurenson for BBC Films. |

Perhaps the "misunderstanding" was the timing of this film and the one by Johnny To.
Whatever he does, he will do a great job. He is one actor that puts his heart and soul into his work. The end results are pretty evident.

That sounds quite logical...
I have to admit, Nick's "ahem" made my smile, too...
possibly someone has mingled with 2008 and 2009, or the months, perhaps...
I can see this happen quite many times... Just five days ago, a friend of mine dated her scribblings with 13/07 instead of 13/03... no idea why that happended...
we were talking while she was writing and suddenly we both looked onto the paper thinking: :wtf:
Perhaps it was the same here... would be quite a good explanation for the "better leave it here" line...
well thought, libra :bigwink:
But they should not be ashamed of it... Things like this do happen...
I can recall a sort of satellite which was supposed to land on or at least to head for Mars... a project worth millions of dollars...
and those highly paided scientists lost it somewhere in the universe as nobody ever recognized, that the asian team was working with totally different units than the american team...
so much for "misunderstandings"...
