LONDON -- Alfred Molina, Orlando Bloom and Berlin Silver Bear winner Sally Hawkins have signed up to join the cast of Lone Scherfig's "An Education," producers said Wednesday.
Written by feted British author Nick Hornby and produced by Finola Dwyer and Amanda Posey, "An Education" already counts Oscar winner Emma Thompson, Peter Sarsgaard ("Boys Don't Cry"), Carey Mulligan ("Pride & Prejudice"), Rosamund Pike ("Die Another Day") and Olivia Williams ("Rushmore") in front of the camera.
Hawkins won a Silver Bear as best actress for her lead role in Mike Leigh's "Happy-Go-Lucky" at the close of this year's Berlin Film Festival.
Developed from an early stage with BBC Films, the movie is being financed by James D. Stern's Endgame Entertainment and BBC Films with Odyssey Entertainment handling worldwide sales.
Scherfig ("Italian for Beginners") will direct from a Hornby script based on a piece of memoir by the celebrated British journalist Lynn Barber.
Billed as a teenage girl's coming-of-age drama set in early 1960s London, it details the story of a 17-year-old girl whose suburban life is about to be blown apart by the utterly unsuitable arrival of a 30-something playboy.
Produced by Dwyer and Posey, and executive produced by Stern and Endgame Entertainment's Douglas E. Hansen and Wendy Japhet, and David M Thompson for BBC Films, the film will shoot in London in March and Apr |

This sounds brilliant. The cast is well defined and if the film is being done in London, all I can say is WOO HOO! OK, what can I say, its a west coast thing.

Variety.com is now also carrying this story which is pretty much a repeat of the above.
Still no news as yet to who Orlando will be portraying.
nahla - February 20, 2008 06:02 PM (GMT)

Orlando Bloom has apparently joined the cast of new movie An Education.
The Lord Of The Rings star will join Rosamund Pike, Emma Thompson and Peter Sarsgaard in the coming-of-age movie set in 60s London.
The film is based on British journalist Lynn Barber's memoir and the screenplay has been written by Nick Hornby, author of hit novels High Fidelity and About A Boy, both of which have been made into successful movies.
The story centres around Jenny (played by rising British star Carey Mulligan), a clever and beautiful 17-year-old who is introduced to a glamorous new life in London and lead astray by the older and unsuitable David, played by Jarhead star Peter Sarsgaard.
Orlando will play his charming business partner Danny, and former Bond girl Rosamund will play his girlfriend Helen.
An Education is being produced by BBC Films and Endgame Entertainment and will be directed by award-winning Danish director Lone Scherfig. |

I can certainly see Orlando portraying this role. It would be a different change for him to showcase his natural charming way.

From the Hollywood Reporter
NEW YORK -- Peter Sarsgaard, Carey Mulligan, Alfred Molina and Emma Thompson will star in the 1960s coming-of-age drama "An Education."
Writer Nick Hornby ("About a Boy") adapted the screenplay from a memoir by Lynn Barber, published in literary magazine Granta. Endgame Entertainment and BBC Films are financing the film.
Danish director Lone Scherfig will helm the story of a 17-year-old girl (Mulligan) living in the quiet London suburbs. As the swinging '60s culture emerges, her world turns upside down after she meets a 35-year-old sportscar-driving Brit (Sarsgaard). He courts her with chic dinners, clubs and foreign trips, charming her father (Molina) but putting her future at Oxford University in jeopardy. Thompson plays the disapproving headmistress of her school.
Finola Dwyer ("Backbeat") and Amanda Posey ("Fever Pitch") are producing. Endgame CEO James D. Stern, Wendy Japhet, Douglas E. Hansen and BBC Films' David M. Thompson are executive producing. Principal photography is set to begin in late March in London.
The film will be Hornby's second produced screenplay after "Pitch," the 1997 U.K. film adaptation of his novel, and his first script not based on his own novel.

:yahoo: Fantastic news.
Happiness can be achieved in so few words, "Orlando will

East coast jargon: Damn Skippy. :P

Kyle - February 21, 2008 08:32 PM (GMT)
Wonderful, wonderful news! :D
Finally a new role, and in a very interesting, british film! Huge advocate for British film here, and with a cast like that what's not to love!
Am really looking forward to all the updates for this project, and finally having a new Orlando film to look forward to yippee! :D
It's cool to see Orlando re-uniting with a cast member again as well (Stellan Saarsgard) - he does like doing that hehe. Off the top of my head I can think of:
* Geoffrey Rush - Pirates and Ned Kelly
* Brendan Gleeson - Troy and Kingdom of Heaven
* Marton Csokas - LOTR and Kingdom of Heaven
* Eric Bana - Black Hawk Down and Troy
*** Stellan Saarsgard - An Education and Pirates*** - No no Kyle thou art a prat - got my Saarsgards mixed up!
* Zoe Saldana - Pirates and Haven
* Sean Bean - LOTR and Troy
* Omid Djalili - Pirates and The Calcium Kid (credit to peppersmom)
And, credit to Wicksey, starting off the directors:
* Ridley Scott - Kingdom of Heaven and Black Hawk Down
* Cameron Crowe - Elizabethtown and Gap Commercial
Oh and let us not forget his works with the remarkable sword master Bob Anderson:
* Bob Anderson - Lord of the Rings and Pirates
Hhmmm I'm getting into crew roles now, lordy there'll be no stopping us hehe!
Aargh how annoying I *know* there's another one I was thinking of before I thought of Zoe Saldana and now I've forgotten it. Grrr rasha frasha, who was it???
Peppersmom - February 21, 2008 08:53 PM (GMT)
 Oh my gosh I'm so excited.
This sounds perfect. What a fab way to get out of these gloomy wintery
days......Orlando filming a British film in London. Heaven.
Fingers crossed fellow team Bloomers!!

You've got the wrong 'Sarsgaard' Kyle! ;)
This is Peter Sarsgaard, he was in Jarhead (which I haven't seen) but I know him from his portrayal of 'Raoul' in The Man in The Iron Mask' staring Leonardo DiCaprio.
Easy mistake to make.
Wicksey - February 21, 2008 11:35 PM (GMT)
Such great news. :towel: I'm glad he'll be able to be a home and work on the new project. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that it will get a wide release, because the area I'm living in now doesn't always get limited released movies. I'm a west coast girl too. WooHoo!
Kyle - February 22, 2008 12:05 AM (GMT)
Ahhh how silly of me Wendy, I know Peter Saarsgard well also, what a fool I am to make that mistake! He's in Shattered Glass as well, which is what I know him from!
Silly me!
And thanks to peppersmom I have another link which I wasn't aware of (it wasn't the other link I was thinking of but I'm happy to add it to the list :)):
* Omid Djalili - Pirates and The Calcium Kid
Wicksey - February 22, 2008 03:51 AM (GMT)
We can't forget the directors
Sir Ridley Scott - Black Hawk Down and Kingdom of Heaven
Cameron Crowe - The Gap Commercial and Elizabethtown

I should imagine this film will have a good world-wide release, but its obviously not going to be of the scale of 'Pirates'. In terms of release I can see more of an 'Elizabethtown' level of publicity exposure.
BTW: Loving all the film 'matches'. Keep going!

....and do not forget that it is a DANISH director (I am a bit proud here...) actually she said to a danish newspaper yesterday, that she were wery happy to have Orlando in the movie, because all the other characters were already casted, except his part, she wanted him and got him, and are we all satisfied with that or what...... :yahoo:
Jesse - February 22, 2008 04:19 PM (GMT)
Thanks so much for letting us know about the Danish article Pia. :friends:
You must be very proud as indeed must be Lone Scherfig.
This is wonderful news. :D

 Hi Squirrel, its great to see you back with us.
Wicksey - February 23, 2008 02:46 AM (GMT)
Thanks Pia for that additional little detail. It's so cool that she wanted him specifically. Kind of like Cameron.
Kyle - February 23, 2008 01:47 PM (GMT)

Sorry girls, but it seems that Orlando is no more in the cast of "An Education".....

Orlando Bloom gives his bit-part the chop
Orlando Bloom is doing full on martial arts training for a Hong Kong kung-fu movie.
It means Bloom has had to drop out of the small role he was going to take in An Education, which has just started production, with Carey Mulligan playing a teenager in Sixties London who comes under the spell of a charismatic - and totally unsuitable - older man played by Peter Sarsgaard, who introduces the girl to a high-living lifestyle.
Bloom was to have played a friend of Sarsgaard's character. Instead, the fastrising Dominic Cooper will play Bloom's role.
Mr Cooper will be seen this year in the screen version of the hit musical Mamma Mia! (still in the West End), and opposite Keira Knightley, Ralph Fiennes and Hayley Atwell in The Duchess.
Meanwhile, Bloom is limbering up and getting fit to be in Johnny To's movie The Red Circle, which will film in Hong Kong.
By the way, An Education is based on a memoir Lynn Barber wrote for Granta - it was adapted for the movies by Nick Hornby. |
