Title: Lunchbox Auction 2007
Description: **Archived**

libra - December 6, 2007 05:15 AM (GMT)
For the 2007 Lunchbox Auction, 100+ iconic celebrities from the entertainment, fashion, art, music, literary and culinary worlds remind us that food matters by creating personalized lunchbox art for online auction. The auction, which goes live on Friday, December 7, 2007 at 12 a.m. EST, will benefit two hunger-relief organizations — Food Bank For New York City and The Lunchbox Fund of South Africa. Each lunchbox is signed and numbered and no two lunchboxes are alike.

Hunger is a global problem. Whether it is New York City or Soweto, South Africa, the children of the world are the ones most severely affected. In New York City, approximately 1.3 million people turn to food assistance programs like soup kitchens and food pantries — and one in five of them is a child. South Africa, a country that is rich and prosperous, is also a country in which an estimated eighteen million people live without adequate food, water or sanitation. Children are often forced to make a decision to learn or to eat.

The 2007 Lunchbox Auction will include one-of-a-kind creations from Mario Batali, Michael Stipe, Sir Elton John, Gwyneth Paltrow, Chris Martin, Kanye West, Mike Myers, Orlando Bloom, Natalie Portman, Joaquin Phoenix, Casey Affleck, Josh Hartnett, Helena Christensen & Leif Sigersen, Anna Sui, Zac Posen, Heatherette, Cynthia Rowley, Lambertson Truex, Built by Wendy, Swarovski, Marchesa, Temperley London, EDUN, Trina Turk, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Cameron Diaz, Reese Witherspoon, Kobe Bryant, Rachael Ray, John Mayer, Lily Allen, Tom Collichio, Dave Lieberman, Nat Finkelstein, Kenny Scharf, Marilyn Minter, Donald Baechler, Enoc Perez, Christopher Makos, Jane Holzer, Danny Clinch, Mark Seliger, Bob Gruen, Jonathan Adler, Mariane & Adam Pearl, Alan Cumming, William Wegman, Jessica Alba, Billy Crudup, Beastie Boys, Kevin Smith, Yoko Ono, Sienna Miller, Patti Smith, Julia Stiles, Cat Power, Peter Sarsgaard, Courteney Cox & David Arquette, Mick Rock, Rufus Wainwright, Chad Hurley (Founder of You Tube), James Franco, Carson Kressley, Alek Wek, Darryl "D.M.C." Still looking for a unique holiday gift?
For a limited time, you can get your hands on Orlando Bloom's lunchbox.
The heartthrob actor is just one of almost 150 stars of film, music, food and fashion to design a signed lunchbox for the charity Lunchbox Auction.
Online bidding, which is open to everyone, begins Friday and ends Dec.21 at ww.thelunchboxauction.org. Proceeds benefit the Food Bank for New York City and the Lunchbox Fund of South Africa.
The sale will kick off with a star-studded miniauction tomorrow night at the Saatchi & Saatchi gallery on Hudson St., where lunchbox designers including Maggie Gyllenhaal, Mike Myers and Michael Stipe will get to check out their handiwork alongside lunchboxes by the likes of Reese Witherspoon, Courtney Love, Rufus Wainwright and Zac Posen.
"What's amazing is the creativity that gets poured into each one," said spokeswoman Lisa Jakobsberg of the Food Bank, which runs programs benefiting 1.3 million New Yorkers.
The first lunchbox auction, in 2005, raised more than $100,000, with individual lunchboxes selling for "between $100 and tens of thousands of dollars," Jakobsberg said.
