This question should probably be in Dead Man's Chest when Tia Dalma tells Will Turner he has a touch of destiny. I have viewed these three films more than I care to say, but where was it determined that it would be him that would stab the heart of Davy Jones and become the new captain of the Flying Dutchman?

If it was back when his father didn't take sides against Jack Sparrow and was sent to the depths, that was his action, but why did it involve his son? Will only wanted the girl, and his life changes throughout the films through no fault of his own. He seems to be a victim of everyone else's circumstance and actions, but it has made me wonder - when was it determined he had the touch of destiny.

Great thought Libra and one that has many answers.

You could say that Will's destiny was determind when Bootstrap was sent to the depths, or maybe it was when Will forged, what started off as Norrington's sword. It was that sword that killed Will...

... there was certainly a touch of destiny about that.

I think that it was Jack who actually determind Will's fate. He wanted to be 'the immortal Captain Jack Sparrow', he gave that up in the first film, so in AWE along came his chance again, but again he gave that up for Will. Jack took Will's hand and helped him stab the heart, it wasn't until that moment that his destiny was decided...

...after all, given the opportunity, Jack would have done that very deed himself.

You can also go way back to when Will was a child. Bootstrap gave him the piece of Aztec Gold, so that the Pirates would remain cursed forever. Maybe his fate was determind then because that gold found its way back to Will, bringing him together with Elizabeth, bringing the Pirates to Port Royal, bringing Jack Sparrow into his life..and so on and so forth.

Definitely lots to think about.

I believe Will's destiny was determined when Will fell in love with Elizabeth as a child. He tells her at the end of AWE that his heart always belong to her. The flying dutchman has a mission and Davy Jones corrupted that mission because he let love destroy him. For the flying dutchman to return to its original mission, I believe it needed a pure heart. A heart in love. And Will and Elizabeth was willing to deal with the pain that love can bring. Will was willing to do what Davy Jones wouldnt. He was willing to fight for love thereby giving his heart away to his true love where Davy Jones had bury his.

It has made me wonder why Jack didn't stab the heart. He had it in his hands, so why didn't he do it? I don't feel that Jack is always the responsible person that people think he is. He basically does what he wants, and while he has a conscience (when he was leaving the Pearl in the second film), he does do things that will benefit himself. He always comes out the winner.

Will was willing to fight for Elizabeth. Throughout the film it was the only thing he wanted, but he met his father and fought to free him too. That was another kind of love, and the injustice of the fate his father suffered and endured to do the right thing.

I've noticed too that many times during the three films, Sparrow refers to Will as "boy" and it has made me wonder how much older Jack was to Will.
