| One way to Orlando Bloom's heart is through his passion for green. The Pirates of the Caribbean heartthrob was at the Global Green pre-Oscar party Wednesday night, walking the emerald-colored carpet in support of more energy-efficient cars, homes and lifestyles. Bloom, who arrived solo, said he's glad to speak out on issues like this because it might inspire some fans to do more than put his poster on the wall. "I got a really sweet birthday message from a bunch of girls who said 'I'm unplugging my mobile phone charger and using energy-efficient light bulbs, and I'm really into the environment,' " he recalled. "I sent a note over the Web, and said, 'You know, I never do this, but thank you so much.' " Though he's an avowed sports-car buff, he said he tries to offset his fuel consumption with solar panels on his London home and by using energy-saving household appliances. If he could change one person's mind to become more environmentally conscious, Bloom said: "The president of this country. He's an outdoorsy guy. It's for our kids and kids' kids, and he's a family man. It's got to start with governments and big business." The party, which took place at Hollywood's Avalon club with a performance by the band Maroon 5, was organized by Global Green USA. |

| Unlike Jim Carrey, Orlando Bloom has always struck us as a man who looks great with longer hair. Maybe it's just because we're so used to seeing him that way -- whether on screen or in everyday life. The actor turned up at Global Green’s Pre-Oscar bash at Avalon in Hollywood last night with radically cropped locks -- messy and rakish, to say the least -- and had even a jaded Hollywood crowd buzzing about his new look. Bloom tells PEOPLE of the new cut is a way to say good-bye to his Pirates of the Caribbean character, saying it's "the end of Will Turner [and] the beginning of a new thing." We want to know what you think of the daring do. Tell us: Do you love Orlando's new look? Or hate it? |

The party, which featured a performance by the band Maroon 5, was organized by Global Green USA, which promotes the use of hybrid vehicles at the Oscars so fewer stars arrive in massive, gas-guzzling limos. Leonardo DiCaprio, who's a big supporter of Global Green and attended the party, has been doing that for years, says Global Green USA president Matt Petersen. "He has been driving a hybrid since long before it was cool." It's a strong year for climate awareness, he added, and this year's party was especially appropriate with the box-office success of Al Gore's An Inconvenient Truth, considered a front-runner for the best-documentary Oscar. Other stars spotted: Penelope Cruz, an Oscar contender for Volver, who clung to the side of her look-alike sister, Monica Cruz. And singer-songwriter James Blunt and his supermodel girlfriend Petra Nemcova. Andrea Bowen of Desperate Housewives was excited about the birth of Marcia Cross' twin girls, but said she wasn't sure about finding an eco-friendly gift. "Something hemp? I don't know if that's a good idea," she said, laughing. "Wooden blocks? But not from a tree. But hopefully I can find something cool that's also green." |

February 22, 2007 at 5:52 pm Orlando Bloom Last night Global Cool attended a star-studded pre-Oscar bash in Los Angeles. The event, the 3rd Annual Global Green Pre-Oscar Party, attracted some of Hollywood’s biggest green-thinking stars including Leonardo DiCaprio, Penelope Cruz, Orlando Bloom and multi-million selling singer James Blunt. Many guests attending the party at the Avalon Club arrived by environmentally friendly vehicles, leading the charge for Sunday’s ceremony with Forest Whitaker, Nicole Kidman, and Kirsten Dunst all expected to arrive at the Oscars in eco-rides. Speaking at the party, Global Cool supporter Orlando Bloom revealed his green credentials, claiming his new London home is going to incorporate solar panels and energy efficient lighting: “It’s as green as I can make it,” said the Pirates of the Caribbean star. The actor went on to suggest that he was pleased that his high-profile status enabled him to get the message of global warming across: “I got a really sweet birthday message from a bunch of girls who said, ‘I’m unplugging my mobile phone charger and using energy-efficient light bulbs, and I’m really into the environment,’ ” said Bloom before adding that he personally responded with a thank you note, which by his own admission he never usually does. Fellow Brit James Blunt also took the opportunity to rally support for the issue, urging fans: “It’s important for all of us, at whatever level, be it individuals, or politicians.” Rumours that the former army officer sang this statement in a falsetto voice remained unconfirmed at time of going to press. |

| Although the Union Square lounge Vessel is not slated to open to the public until '07, Leonardo DiCaprio, his gal (model Bar Rafaeli), Orlando Bloom, Salma Hayek, Kevin Connelly, Lukas Haas, and Gael Garcia Bernal (purr) got a VIP tour of the space after they all attended the Global Green "Gorgeous and Green" event. The crowd stayed until the wee hours, listening to music and chatting about the environment (yup, this is how we do it in SF). Earlier in the evening at the event, Orlando Bloom reportedly loved H.'s cocktail at the Square One table, the Rainforest Green-Tea-Ni, saying, "This is fabulous." Or would that be ecofabulous? |
