The local movie industry will not be dormant either, if the promises by the directors is anything to go by. Blue Sky Films is expected to release Africa mon'Amour, a TV series based on life in the African continent that was shot over 15 weeks.

Jenny Pont of Pontact Productions said that they will be hoping to shoot and produce two complete feature films this year. The script of The Journey is the Destination, a movie based on the life of photojournalist Dan Eldon, killed in Somalia in 1993, is ready.

Johnny Depp and Reese Witherspoon may enjoy a very good year at the movies, according to a recent survey by Fandango, the nation's largest online, phone and mobile movie ticketing destination.

To compile the "Fandango Fifty", the entertainment site asked filmgoers to rank the stars they are most looking forward to seeing on the big screen in 2007. The online survey was posted at Fandango.com during the last week of December 2006, when several thousand moviegoers voted for the actors most likely to draw them to the theater.

Seizing the top spot for most anticipated male performer is Johnny Depp, as Captain Jack Sparrow, in the third installment of Pirates of the Caribbean (at #1), followed by box office reliables Will Smith in the sci-fi action-adventure I Am Legend (#2), Tom Hanks in the political drama Charlie Wilson's War (#3), Denzel Washington in the crime drama American Gangster (#4), and The Bourne Ultimatum's Matt Damon (#5).

Leading the pack as the most anticipated female performer is Reese Witherspoon, slated to appear in the 2007 political thriller Rendition (#1), followed by Sandra Bullock in the supernatural thriller Premonition (#2), Julia Roberts in Charlie Wilson's War (#3), Pirates' Keira Knightley (#4), and Drew Barrymore at #5 (for her two movies in 2007: the comedy Music and Lyrics and the drama Lucky You).

"The Fandango Fifty shows the importance of star power at the box office, and reflects moviegoer excitement about the real variety at theaters this year," says Fandango Film Commentator Richard Horgan.

Orlando Bloom has signed with CAA. The actor, who most recently starred in "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dean Man's Chest," had been agent-less since leaving ICM in June when his then-agent Chris Andrews, ended his 19-year run at ICM and joined CAA. Bloom, whose credits include the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy, "Kingdom of Heaven," Troy" and "Black Hawk Down" will next be seen in the third installment of the "Pirates" series, "At World's End." He continues to be repped by Brillstein-Grey Entertainment.

My role in the Pirates of the Caribbean series has inadvertently made me something of a connoisseur of Caribbean cuisine - and Dominica had the most impact on me. We found this amazing tree-house restaurant called Indigo. It's off the beaten path, and run by Marie Frederick and her husband Clem, who serve this delicious pasta recipe.

450g spaghetti
1 large bunch fresh parsley
1 cup fresh basil
4 cloves garlic
6tbsp grated Parmesan
1/2tsp salt
2tbsp olive oil
1 medium onion, chopped
1 tin of tomatoes, drained
1tbsp brown sugar

Cook the pasta according to directions until al dente, then drain and rinse. Pour the pasta back into the saucepan, and replace the lid to keep warm. In a blender or food processor, combine the parsley, basil, garlic, Parmesan, salt and 1 tablespoon of the oil. Process to a smooth paste. Heat the remaining tablespoon of oil in a medium frying pan. Add the onion and cook, stirring occasionally, for about 7 minutes or until soft. Add the tomatoes and cook for about 5 minutes. Reduce the heat and season, adding the brown sugar and cook for about 5 minutes. Remove from the heat and stir in the herb mixture. Toss the pasta with the sauce and serve immediately. E

Stars were seeing green and checking out Tinseltown power brokers Wednesday night as the pre-Oscar party action kicked into high gear. Among nominees spotted celebrating: Penelope Cruz and Eddie Murphy.

Global Green

Pirates of the Caribbean heartthrob Orlando Bloom was at the Global Green party at the Avalon club, walking the emerald-colored carpet in support of more energy-efficient cars, homes and lifestyles.

Bloom, who arrived solo, said he's glad to try to inspire some fans to do more than put his poster on the wall. "I got a really sweet birthday message from a bunch of girls who said, 'I'm unplugging my mobile phone charger and using energy-efficient light bulbs, and I'm really into the environment,' " he said. "I sent a note over the Web and said, 'You know, I never do this, but thank you so much.' "

Though he's an avowed sports-car buff, he said he tries to offset his fuel consumption with solar panels on his London home and by using energy-saving household appliances.

The party, which featured a performance by the band Maroon 5, was organized by Global Green USA, which promotes the use of hybrid vehicles at the Oscars so fewer stars arrive in massive, gas-guzzling limos.

Leonardo DiCaprio, who's a big supporter of Global Green and attended the party, has been doing that for years, says Global Green USA president Matt Petersen. "He has been driving a hybrid since long before it was cool." It's a strong year for climate awareness, he added, and this year's party was especially appropriate with the box-office success of Al Gore's An Inconvenient Truth, considered a front-runner for the best-documentary Oscar.

Other stars spotted: Penelope Cruz, an Oscar contender for Volver, who clung to the side of her look-alike sister, Monica Cruz. And singer-songwriter James Blunt and his supermodel girlfriend Petra Nemcova.

Andrea Bowen of Desperate Housewives was excited about the birth of Marcia Cross' twin girls, but said she wasn't sure about finding an eco-friendly gift.

"Something hemp? I don't know if that's a good idea," she said, laughing. "Wooden blocks? But not from a tree. But hopefully I can find something cool that's also green."

LOS ANGELES (AP): Orlando Bloom says he's building his house in London with the environment in mind.

"It's as green as I can make it,'' Bloom said Wednesday from a pre-Oscar party benefiting the environmental organization Global Green USA and its efforts to combat global climate change.

"It's got solar panels on the roof, energy efficient light bulbs _ newer technology basically that is environmentally friendly,'' he said after arriving at the event in a plug-in hybrid vehicle.

Not everyone can live a totally green lifestyle, Bloom said, but they can start by unplugging their cell phone chargers or turning off their TV when not in use.

"It doesn't have to be overwhelming, there are simple things we can do,'' he said.

The event also drew celebrities such as Penelope Cruz, Chevy Chase, James Blunt and members of Maroon 5. It kicked off a campaign to shuttle celebrities to Oscar-related events in environmentally friendly cars.

Al Pacino, Charlize Theron, and Orlando Bloom were among a host of stars partying at the US-Ireland Alliance's special pre-Oscar bash.

A special green carpet was laid out for a host of Irish stars to walk down at the Ebell Club in Los Angeles.

Singer Van Morrison was performing, as well as being honoured for his contribution to the film industry, although the star remained tight-lipped in front of press before the party began.

As for the A-listers, Al Pacino - who was there to introduce and pay tribute to Van the Man - avoided the waiting paparazzi by sneaking in through a back entrance to the party, while Charlize Theron also crept in the back door.

Andie MacDowell revealed she was enjoying the run-up to the Oscars.

"There are an enormous amount of parties," said the star, who has jetted into Hollywood for the week. "I don't live here, so it's really nice for me to come here and have some fun, I'm happy to be here tonight."

The Four Weddings And A Funeral star also said she was 100% behind Dame Helen Mirren and Dame Judi Dench's nominations for Best Actress.

"I'm just glad to see that somebody is mature and still being appreciated, but the British are always really good at that, you know? Great actresses."

Actor Orlando Bloom is said to be fuming after he was "set up" to look like he was dating hot Aussie model Miranda Kerr as part of a PR scam.

Orlando was seen house-hunting in New York with the bombshell, sparking rumours that they were a serious item.

But it has emerged they were both made to look at the same apartment block at the same time to help boost the new development's profile.

Insiders say it is the latest PR stunt by New York's swanky Atelier block, to make it look like a celebrity hotspot.

According to New York reports, Bloom and Kerr were deliberately brought to a viewing meeting at the same time so they could create media interest.

An insider said: "The meeting was a publicity stunt set up by the press-hungry Atelier. The building has offered free apartments to a slew of celebs, including Lindsay Lohan, in order to get buzz."

Kerr was particularly upset with the gossip, because she has a boyfriend, Diesel model Brent Tuhtan.

That is just beyond belief!

Young, hunky and talented Orlando Bloom is undoubtedly one of the most in-demand actors around at the moment, but it seems the Tinseltown star looking for something beyond the fame and fortune which comes with Hollywood success. The Pirates Of The Caribbean actor has decided to take a break from his screen career in order to immerse himself in Buddhism.

The handsome 30-year-old, who embraced the Eastern religion over two years ago, is apparently keen to use the break to refocus his energies. He made the decision after a recent trip to South Africa gave him time to think. "I've been white knuckling it for so long," he told The Daily Mirror. "Between the first Lord Of The Rings and the last Pirates Of The Caribbean, I've been going non-stop."

Orlando, who shares his faith with several Tinseltown stars, including Richard Gere, Steven Seagal and singer Tina Turner, says the decision doesn't mean he's withdrawing from life, however, but simply represents a chance to recharge his batteries. "The philosospy I've embraced isn't about sitting under a tree and studying my navel," he explains. "It's about studying what's going on in my life and using that fuel to go on and live a bigger life.

'The philosophy I've embraced isn't about sitting under a tree and studying my navel,' he says. 'It's about studying what's going on in my life and using the fuel to go on and live a bigger life.

BLOOM'S ECO-FRIENDLY HOUSE 'A HASSLE'

British actor ORLANDO BLOOM's has admitted building an eco-friendly house has been "a hassle". The Pirates Of The Caribbean star revealed earlier this year (07) he was building the 'green' house in London, but admits being as environmentally-minded as possible has meant he has spent more money that first intended. He says, "It has been a hassle, no denying it. It has come in at double the budget but I'll admit it was me who was making all the changes! "It's powered by all the latest technology and I've tried to think about recycling - using as much old material as I can. It isn't furnished yet and I'm still living out of a suitcase but it's coming together."

Orlando Bloom Taking a Break from Movies

THURSDAY MAY 24, 2007 03:35 PM EDT

Orlando Bloom says that after a few whirlwind years of movie-making, he's ready to take a break – for now.

"It's been wonderful, but I'm sort of psyched to do something completely different," Bloom, 30, tells the Associated Press.

The Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End star will soon be playing to much smaller crowds: He has signed on to star in the David Storey play In Celebration in London.

Although he's excited about being on stage, Bloom says he expects that he'll be "rather terrified" as well.

"I just really wanted to have a very organic experience. I didn't want to feel like I was in a star vehicle yet by any means," he tells the AP.

But that's not to say that Bloom, who has starred the mega-successful Pirates and Lord of the Rings trilogies, is giving up blockbusters: "I'm looking forward to continuing working on movies and making choices that excite me, and right now that is doing some theater."

In any case, he says he feels that he's just at the beginning of his career and wants to pace himself. "Actors don't really get into their stride until they're in their late 30s and 40s," he says. "So when I think of the bigger picture, I've got a long road ahead."

60 SECONDS: Orlando Bloom
by LESLEY O'TOOLE - Thursday, May 24, 2007
Orlando Bloom

Heart-throb actor Orlando Bloom came to fame as arrow-shooting elf Legolas in the Lord Of The Rings films. He has more recently been seen frolicking around with zombie pirates as Will Turner in the Pirates Of The Caribbean trilogy. Now, he wants to fight climate change in his time off. Pirates Of The Caribbean: At World's End is out now.

This is your last Pirates film – do you have mixed emotions about it?
Yes. It feels like I’ve been doing a pirate movie for most of my adult life but I feel very fortunate because these are quality films and I’ve worked with great people. It’s been a fantastic safety net. It’s definitely a bittersweet feeling. I’m getting ready to do some theatre in London. I need to do something completely different. I want to go back to what it felt like when I left drama school and I was immersing myself in a new world.

Daniel Radcliffe has just been naked on stage in London. Is that what you’re aiming for?
Go naked in London? Nothing wrong with a bit of nudity.

You celebrated your 30th birthday on the Pirates set. Was that a milestone for you?
Everything takes second place to the serious business of making a movie, especially one like this, but it was fun. Friends and family were around and it was lovely to be in Hawaii. Turning 30 and looking at my life and thinking how fortunate I’ve been, I realised I just want to challenge myself in a different way.

Did Johnny Depp really get a farewell pirate cake?
We all got a farewell pirate cake but it was a weird way to end because it’s not like we all had a final day of school. I had about three endings or maybe four. I kept coming back for pickup shots and then Jerry [Bruckheimer, director of Pirates] had a great idea for the end of the credits, so that was another one.

Was 30 a big deal?
No, I was actually really excited to turn 30. I felt like I didn’t have to take myself seriously any more because the number did it for me. It was a big relief. I had a great birthday and it was an exciting transition time for me.

Are you really building an eco-friendly house in London?
Yeah. I got back from Antarctica and it was fascinating to see what is at stake. The environment is such a massive issue that we all think it’s doom and gloom, it’s all or nothing but actually I don’t think that’s the case. You can drive an SUV but there’s a balance. If you do that, maybe use energy-efficient light bulbs at home or just be conscious of switching off lights. If you can afford to drive an SUV, maybe you can afford to make a donation to a wind farm or plant some trees. It’s all about balance. If you think of the ice caps as the fridge of our planet, if your fridge at home died, the food you eat would go rotten and you’d starve. I’m still figuring out how to use a version of solar panels to run my home in London but all my light bulbs will be energy-efficient.

Haven’t you been doing some stuff for Unicef?
I’ve been trying to. We had a trip cancelled unfortunately for security reasons but it’s in the pipeline to do some work for them and I’m really excited about that.

Your character, Will Turner, is more of a leader in this film. Are you a natural leader in life?
At school, I was always the captain at sports and actually all the attention I suddenly got with Lord Of The Rings put me into a shell for a while. It made me more shy because I wasn’t sure how to deal with it. I think I’m still learning to come out of that shell. The upside of this trilogy ending is for me to gain confidence by working on my craft in another way. I know what I’m capable of and I’m not afraid to make mistakes. There is nothing at stake and everything to gain at this point.

Any chance of your doing a Keira Knightley and announcing you don’t want to make films any more?
No. I’m not giving up anything for anything.

How do you handle fame now?
I just try to keep it real. My family and friends are great. I have a cool dog. I’ve been afforded the ability to have a home and I’m working on living in that home and creating a very real life. When you work in such a surreal environment as movies, just listening to some tunes or hanging out with friends is what you crave. Even time alone. So I’ve been enjoying that.

What tunes are you listening to?
The Raconteurs. I’m really enjoying them.

Your favourite films are Hotel Rwanda, The Constant Gardener and The Last King Of Scotland. Are you interested in Africa?
Those films are all socially conscious and aware. They shed light on different parts of the world, on strife and conflict that we all need to be aware of and they have done it courageously using the medium of film. I would love to work on films like those.

How’s your love life? Is anyone waiting for you at home?

Brave new world
By Andy Dougan

ORLANDO BLOOM TAKES TIME OUT FOR ADVENTURES

Orlando Bloom may have taken the title of his latest film a bit too literally. The 30-year-old British actor stars in the eagerly-awaited latest Pirates Of The Caribbean movie which opens tonight.

It's subtitled "At World's End" and it turns out that's pretty much where Bloom has been. He went as far south as it is possible to go without falling off on a trip to Antarctica in conditions which were far from movie star splendour.

Bloom is a keen environmentalist and when his cousin, a photographer, went to the bottom of the world to take photographs for a book about global warming Bloom went along too.

"I wanted to check out that environment," he says. "I wanted to see what was at stake. It is easy to sit here and see how the weather patterns are affecting it, but I wanted to see for myself.

"I spent three weeks on a 1950s Norwegian icebreaker. I slept in a room the size of a bus shelter and was on the top bunk. I shared a toilet and bathroom with 27 other guys and did the washing up," he laughs. "There were no privileges. The privilege was being in that position at that time.

"I went scuba diving and climbed up a mountain," he says. "The water was freezing, but I had a swim for the hell of it. It was crazy."

The latest Pirates film was shot in considerably warmer climes, in Hawaii. Bloom turned 30 during the shoot so he had a birthday party in Hawaii and another in Los Angeles.

"I have to tell you that it felt very good to reach 30 and it felt good to have lived this far," he says thoughtfully. "I thought I would never make it to 30. It feels different. It feels less...urgent."

That is reflected in the fact that for the first time in eight years Bloom is out of work - by choice. He went straight from drama school at the Guildhall to Lord of the Rings and he hasn't stopped since.

Now he's taking time to stop and smell the roses. But he is still plagued by photographers. There were snaps for example of him and Victoria's Secret model Miranda Kerr. Bloom, single since he split with Kate Bosworth, is philosophical.

"It's like a trade-off," he says. "I did not go to drama school expecting to deal with all of this stuff or that I would even get to the point when it would be part of my life."

Having said that he did get the opportunity to send up his whole image with his guest appearance on the second season of Extras, portraying himself as being hugely embittered against Pirates co-star Johnny Depp.

"Ricky Gervais and Steven Merchant are fantastic," he says with delight. "I loved what Kate Winslet did on Extras and I thought it would be great to do something like that.

"They wrote a script and I said, 'There has to be more to be had here'. I said I have not done two trilogies not to have a dig at some of it' so I ended up taking the mickey out of myself."

Orlando Bloom has claimed that his fellow Brits help to keep his feet on the ground.

The actor has vowed that he will not become big-headed despite the huge success of his movie career and has thanked the British people for keeping him in check.

"That's what I love about being British. Rugby is one of our national sports and in the same way, the British people like to take you down and tackle you," Bloom explained.

"It's like they are saying 'Don't think you are going that far ahead of anyone else because we are all part of the same pack'."

Orlando Bloom trades sword for stage
QUOTE
LOS ANGELES: Orlando Bloom plans to hang up his sword after spending nearly a decade making the blockbuster trilogies Pirates of the Caribbean and Lord of the Rings to tread the boards of a London theatre this summer.

Bloom, 30, begins rehearsals in June for Celebration by playwright David Storey. The play will open in July. "I just need to do this," Bloom said in an interview last week.

"I wanted to feel like going back to basics in a sense and having just a completely different experience."

Bloom had intended to go onto the stage after graduating from the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in Britain, but instead ended up on the big screen in a series of blockbuster sword-and-sandal films, starting with the Lord of the Rings trilogy, which began production in 1999.

He also appeared in Troy, Kingdom of Heaven and the three Pirates films, the latest of which hits theatres this week.

"I think everything takes its toll," he said, when asked whether the nearly decade-long glare of fame had been a strain. "It just felt like I wanted to get back into the driver's seat of my career and my life, and part of that is coming back to what I have known in the past ... really solidifying the foundation of my working career."

Working with acclaimed stage actors Bill Nighy and Geoffrey Rush in Pirates also whetted his desire to return to stage acting, he said.

"They all keep their hand in because it's working on the craft ... it's really having that immediate interaction with the audience, having great text and letting the dialogue fall and see how it lands," Bloom said.

Bloom would not close the door on making a fourth "Pirates" film after his theatre hiatus.

"It's been an incredible ride for everyone involved. Nobody thought we were going to make three movies out of the one successful starter," he said. "Who knows what the future holds. Right now I can't even think about that."

Career in Bloom
QUOTE
After starring in two megasized Hollywood trilogies that have taken him from unknown to A-list (Pirates of the Caribbean and Lord of the Rings) Orlando Bloom is walking away from movies - temporarily.

"It's been an incredible ride," said the 30-year-old, sprawled across a sofa at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel. "And it's been wonderful but I'm sort of psyched to do something completely different."

Hence, he's returning to the theatre - the London stage, to be exact, to appear in David Storey's play, In Celebration.

Sailing straight from London's Guildhall School of Music and Drama into Hollywood's spotlight was "huge" and "surreal," Bloom said, an experience that moved him "to go back to the beginning, as if I've just come out of school again."

Inspired by movies and theatre, as well as the street performers in his hometown of Canterbury, England, Bloom chose his career as a child.

"When I realised that if I was an actor, I could be any character I wanted instead of just one particular, I was like, 'Wow, that's cool,"' he said.

He joined London's National Youth Theatre and won a scholarship to train with the British Drama Academy. His learned his craft on the stage. But his first job after graduation made him a movie star: the brave elf Legolas in Lord of the Rings.

Since then, he's become a heartthrob, one of People magazine's "Hottest Bachelors" and "50 Most Beautiful." At the Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End premiere at Disneyland recently, women and girls swooned as Bloom walked the red carpet.

Some had painted their faces and T-shirts with "I love Orlando Bloom."

He shrugs that off, saying his mother and sister tease him endlessly about his sex-symbol status - then stretching his arms overhead to reveal a perfectly toned stomach adorned with a tiny sun tattoo.

Bloom's Hollywood immersion also gave him instant leading-man potential. He brought the perfect blend of innocence and gravity to his Pirates character, Will Turner, said director Gore Verbinski.

"In the first movie, I needed somebody who could be two things. One, sort of a blossoming leading man, but also a little bit awkward ... Then we're going to germinate that and grow that, and he's going to ultimately become as complex and as dark as the rest of the characters in the movie," he said.

Pirates producer Jerry Bruckheimer, who previously worked with Bloom on 2001's Black Hawk Down, took his praise of the actor one step further.

"He could be this generation's Errol Flynn. No doubt in my mind," Bruckheimer said. "He's handsome, he's debonair, he's a good actor, he's got a great smile. He's smart. It's all about choices, if actors make the right choices. He's got the talent, so it comes down to what he picks and the directors and people he works with."

Bloom's burgeoning Hollywood clout has already brought him ample opportunities, he said, from Ridley Scott's Kingdom of Heaven and Cameron Crowe's Elizabethtown to the chance to return to the stage.

"I'm looking forward to continuing working on movies and making choices that excite me, and right now that is doing some theater," he said, though he expects to be "rather terrified."

"Actors don't really get into their stride until they're in their late 30s and 40s. ... So when I think of the bigger picture, I've got a long road ahead and I think it's going to be important for me as an actor to work on my craft in this way."

Bloom didn't use his star power to snag a leading role, either - although he acknowledges he probably could have.

"I'm just part of what will be a great company of actors," he said, occasionally chewing at his thumbnail. "I just really wanted to have a very organic experience. I didn't want to feel like I was in a star vehicle yet by any means."

One arena where Bloom is taking on a more prominent role is environmental activism. He recently returned from a trip to Antarctica, where he "shared a bathroom and a toilet with 27 other guys," along with dishwashing and laundry duties.

Bloom saw how "tragically fragile" and "precious" the ice caps are and was inspired to speak out.

"It can be all doom and gloom when one talks about the environment ... like the ice caps are melting and everything's gone to custard, but the truth is that's not the case," he said. "Life is about balance, and we all have to make the effort in areas that we can to enable us to make a difference."

I'm not sexy at all: Orlando Bloom

QUOTE
With striking roles in The Lord of the Rings trilogy and Pirates of the Caribbean, actor Orlando Bloom is in the unique position of having been part of the two most successful film franchises in Hollywood history.

In conversation with HT City, Orlando Bloom talks about being Google's most wanted man, Pirates and the lessons he learned from his pal Leonardo DeCaprio.

Why do you think the Pirate films have been so successful?
Lots of reasons starting with Johnny, who's just amazing in the films and director Gore Verbinski, who's a genius when it comes to bringing together all the elements the special effects, the characters, the epic surroundings and still making a film that's kind of loose and crazy and from the hip.

I think the combination of what seems like the real world combined with the surreal fantasy of Davy Jones and the skeleton crew is really appealing as well.

After Pirates, do you have any more work lined up?
With this long stint of working coming to an end and also turning 30, I thought it was the right time to really consider what it was that inspired me to be an actor, who it was that I looked up to and what I wanted to achieve when I set out. So I'm excited about the next chapter in the making.

How do you feel about being a pin-up? Apparently you're the most searched for name on Google and you also are the world's most kissable man.
I try not to give it any thought. I mean, I'm grateful, but I don't think of myself as handsome or sexy at all.

How does popularity affect your day-to-day life?
Well, I can't remember the last place I went to and wasn't recognised. It's the price you pay, but of course you don't think about that when you start out. You don't think it's going to happen, and then suddenly out of nowhere it's a train you can't get off.

Have you discussed your career with Leonardo DiCaprio?
We're friends, so yes, we've talked about our careers. But look at Johnny Depp as well. What's interesting to me about Johnny is that he's made a career out of making movies that people might call failures and now he's in the driving seat and his choices look like the right ones. I think you just mustn't be afraid of making mistakes. I'm sure I'll make lots of them!

Pirates of The Caribbean actor Orlando Bloom has said that he refuses to watch any of his films on DVD; because what he sees disappoints him.

Despite receiving huge acclaim from fans and critics in blockbuster franchises the Pirates of the Caribbean and Lord of the Rings, Orlando Bloom still lacks confidence in his own on-screen capabilities.

He said: “I’ve never even watched one of the DVDs. I sometimes think it would be nice to show your kids one day.
“Sometimes I catch a glimpse in hotel rooms or on planes, and think, ‘Eurggh, is that what I was doing?’”

From the Sunday Telegraph here is an article about the most powerful British stars in Hollywood...

Britain's most powerful film stars in Hollywood

QUOTE
Challenge anyone to name the big players in British film and Kate Winslet, Emma Thompson and Alan Rickman are all likely to get a mention.

The actor who played Yosser Hughes in TV's Boys from the Blackstuff and the man who co-wrote Spycatcher probably wouldn't be given a second thought.

But those two are surprise names on a list of the most powerful British film stars and movie-makers in Hollywood today. Winslet, Thompson and Rickman, on the other hand, don't even make the grade.

The list, compiled by the UK Film Council, reveals the country's most successful actors in terms of box office earnings over the course of the past five years. It also lists the most successful directors of the same period.

To qualify for the list, actors must have had significant roles in films with a box office haul of at least £500 million, while directors need to have taken at least a tenth of that with their own projects.

Orlando Bloom, 30, who starred in seven blockbusters, including the Pirates of the Caribbean and Lord of the Rings franchises, tops the list with a combined box office gross of more than £2.6 billion.

But it isn't only young talent who take star billing.

Sir Ian McKellen, 68, Christopher Lee, 85, Brian Cox, 61, and Bernard Hill, 62, who starred in Boys from the Blackstuff, all make the top 10, with an average age for the list of 41.

McKellen, one of Britain's most celebrated stage actors, wasn't even considered a film star until he reprised his acclaimed National Theatre portrayal of Richard III for the big screen in 1995.

But the actor, who once confessed he was frightened of the camera, now finds himself in second place, thanks largely to his starring role as Gandalf in the Lord of the Rings films. Hill makes the list thanks to his role as Theoden in the same trilogy.

Only six women appear on the two lists.

At 17, Emma Watson, who plays Hermione Granger in the Harry Potter films, is the most successful female star, ranked joint fourth alongside her co-stars.

Keira Knightley, who also appears in the Pirates of the Caribbean films, is seventh, ahead of Kate Beckinsale and Helena Bonham Carter.

Mike Newell, the director of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, tops the list of directors, comfortably ahead of Ridley Scott, whose three separate hits earned him second place.

Paul Greengrass, who directed The Bourne Supremacy and co-wrote the banned book Spycatcher with renegade MI5 agent Peter Wright, was ranked number four.

John Woodward, the chief executive of the UK Film Council, trumpeted the list as proof that British films and British talent were dominating box offices around the world.

"British talent is riding high and in demand for the world's biggest films," he told The Sunday Telegraph.

But some movie experts expressed disappointment that stars such as Winslet had missed out by choosing low-budget movies.

Louise Tutt, the deputy editor of Screen International, said the rankings had more to do with the success of individual films than the bankability of their stars.

"It's about the popularity of Lord of The Rings, not about Orlando and Ian who were in them," she said.

The recent success of Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End, which was released this year and so not included, will keep both Bloom and Knightley on the list for some while.

But many in the industry predict that others could quickly fall by the wayside and doubt the capacity of older stars to keep picking up lead roles in blockbusters.

Mark Denning, the editor of Empire magazine, said: "It is unlikely that Orlando will carry on at that level of box office success because there aren't many blockbusters around. But he will certainly hover around the top for a while."

A new generation of actors is already beginning to challenge them.

Daniel Craig, who recently made his debut as James Bond, will rocket up the list as further films are released.

So will Emily Blunt, who was inundated with offers after her scene-stealing appearance in The Devil Wears Prada. The UK Film Council compiled the list based on the 200 most successful films released between 2001 and 2006.

TOP 10 MONEY-MAKERS:

Orlando Bloom - Lord of the Rings trilogy, three Pirates of the Caribbean films, Troy, Kingdom of Heaven: £2.64 billion
