There's an interesting article with Sir Ridley Scott at
IndieLondon where he talks about the 'Kingdom of Heaven Directors Cut' DVD.

Q. There was a lot of criticism about Orlando Bloom in the film. What did you think about that and why did you come to cast him? Ridley Scott: He did pretty good here. In Troy, he was asked to play Paris, who essentially would be described as being weak. The others are strong, Brad Pitt and Eric Bana, they’re the hunks. But poor Orlando was there playing Paris, although he did get the woman. And I think he did great. But Kingdom of Heaven is a big film to walk into. He’s always been behind someone else – as Paris he was behind Brad and Eric. But here he’s right out front and I thought he did very well. |
Only 'very well'? I thought Orlando did a great job and I don't care what critics or other persons of high authority in the film industry say... I'm sticking to my feelings about Orlando's performance and won't be swayed otherwise!!
There is a very long review of the KOH DVD's, both theatrical and Directors cut at
DVD TIMES.

| Longer, certainly more epic and, having been given the scope for the better development of its characters, a more rewarding experience but not one that would convince anyone who didn't really enjoy the Theatrical Cut that they're going to witness an entirely new film. For those who liked or were impressed with the original version of this film, this Director's Cut simply offers a much more complete version of the film but not, however, one that is substantially different. |
I have to say I'm very impressed with it. So many loose ends have been tied up and it's great to have the whole storyline of Sybilla and her son in the film. I'm pleased that it's made clear that the priest is Balian's bullying brother, it gives even more reason for Balian turning on him.
It's just so much better all round.
Just adding this here seeing as the article is still available.

| Ridley Scott is directing his latest picture from behind an armed guard numbering hundreds of soldiers following a series of death threats from Islamic militants. The Gladiator director is in Morocco shooting Kingdom of Heaven, a historical epic about the Crusades starring Liam Neeson, Orlando Bloom and Jeremy Irons. But the film's subject matter has reportedly enraged many locals and King Mohammed of Morocco has ordered that security be increased. "There is concern but everyone is getting on with the job," a crew member told reporters. |
I remember that all too well.
